Open courtyards and flea markets in Old Rauma

During Lace Week, the residents of Old Rauma open their private courtyards to the public. Visitors can explore the beautiful courtyards where they can buy drinks and snacks and browse the flea markets organised by the residents. Please note that the flea markets may be postponed if it rains. Participating residents’ courtyards can be identified by a sign bearing the Old Rauma Association logo.

The courtyards are open to the public as specified by the residents, but most of them welcome visitors from 10.00 to 18.00. A map showing the locations of open courtyards will be published shortly.

10.00 Kehokätköilyä walking tour guided by dance artist Maria Kananen

The walking tour invites you to come and explore your bodily movements and senses. The tour includes simple exercises that lead participants to move and enjoy the urban environment and green spaces in a deeper way. Please bring weather appropriate clothing and leave unnecessary carry-ons at home. The slow-paced tour is approximately 1 km, so it is also suitable for pushchairs and those using a wheelchair. Kehokätköilyä is a community dance piece created in cooperation with RaumArs ry, City of Rauma and the Regional Dance Centre of Western Finland.

The duration of the tour is approximately 1 hour
There is a maximum number of 10 participants. All participants are required to register in advance.

Daily changing programme in the Art Museum courtyard. The garden party events feature various performances, work demonstrations, exhibitions, workshops, discussions, and lectures.

  • Rauma Art Museum summer exhibitions
    The museum features the “Veden taju: Järven hiljaisuus” exhibition by Ulla-Maija Alanen, which explores the underwater world and life of aquatic plants. The soundscape has been created by Maija Ruuskanen.  The museum also features the “Unia vai kaikuja” exhibition by Laura Hynninen, which explores nocturnal experiences.
  • 10.00–14.00 Tatted lace café
    Have a cup of coffee and tatted lace! As a Lace Week tradition tatted lace café invites visitors to familiarise themselves with the secrets of tatting. The café shares tips and ideas for tatting and everyone is welcome to try making their own lace. The members of Käpypitsiyhdistys (the Association of Tatted lace makers) demonstrate some beginner-friendly techniques and lend equipment and materials to participants.

    Marjatta Paasikivi from Käpypitsiyhdistys demonstrates tatted lace making and tells about the history and basic techniques of tatting.
  • 12.00–12.15 Fikuleeri dance performance
    The Folk Dance Association Fikuleeri’s adult dance group Frilla will perform a dance piece in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the international folk music event Pispalan Sottiisi. The performance will include Finnish folk dance, polonaise, minuet and coronation polska.

Häplänperän Valittajat hosts a safety lace tour to showcase local statues and Rauma’s culture and history and to create nets made of nylon lace over, around or next to the statues. Get caught up in nylon lace by the statues or take the whole tour with us! Create lace nets with us, get to know local history and have fun!

13.00 Hobbyhorses and hurdle competition

Meet at Tammela courtyard, departure at 1:00pm to Tekkalan puisto park. Kepparitalli Pits de Rauma invites all hobbyhorse enthusiasts to join the parade with or without their horse. After the procession arrives at Tekkalan puisto park, the hurdle competition will start.

The competition has four classes: 1. class 20cm (3–5-year-olds), 2. class 30cm (6–8-year-olds), 3. class 50cm (9–13-year-olds) and 4. class 60cm (open to all ages).
The youngest are the first to register and first to compete. You can borrow a horse at the venue if you don’t have your own. Starting fee 2€. Please note that this event is weather dependent.

The duo Wimme Saari and Tapani Rinne combines the duo’s backgrounds and experiences in their performances. Saari is a member of the Sámi people, whereas Rinne originates from Satakunta but is now based in Helsinki. Their music combines the traditional joik with a modern soundscape. Saari and Rinne have made music together for over 25 years and given their unique and magical performance on different continents.

Ida Elina is an active live performer, a singer-songwriter known for playing kantele, the Finnish zither, to accompany their pop music. The charismatic artist amazes with their beautiful voice and an innovative way of playing the traditional Finnish instrument.

The “Lace on Skin” exhibition curated by Paola Suhonen brings lace into a new light and a new era, connecting cultural-historical traditions with the present day. The lace exhibition is organised by the Rauma Museum and the Rauma Art Museum.

The timeless beauty of lace

Nyplääjät ry’s lace exhibition features traditional lace made in Rauma and various lace tablecloths and accessories. During the exhibition, Nyplääjät ry provides information on the basics of lace-making as well as tips on unfinished lace works. The exhibition also includes a raffle.

Nyplääjät ry is a lace-making association founded in 1948 that aims to ensure the preservation of lace-making skills. The lace exhibition organised by Nyplääjä ry has already been part the Lace Week programme more than 50 times.

The exhibition features the lace work of all those who have been awarded the title of Lace Maker of the Year, as well as lace work from Lace Centre Emelia’s lace design competitions.

Lace Centre Emelia is one of Rauma’s two lace-making associations and mainly focuses on new lace-making techniques and modern-day applications of lace, while also promoting the traditions of lace-making. Every year Lace Centre Emelia chooses the Lace Maker of the Year, whose work will be on display during the following year’s Lace Week.

Rauma Lace permanent exhibition

Rauma Lace’s extended exhibition in the Old Town Hall features an extensive lace collection and explores the use of lace and the history of lace-making from the 18th century to the present day. The oldest laces on display are from the early 19th century.

Needlework exhibition

The exhibition features needlework items made by the members of the Rauma Martha Organisation during the coronavirus pandemic. The exhibition also includes a raffle.

“Pellava kullaks – Totta tänäänkin!” flax exhibition

The exhibition organised by the Kodisjoki Martha Organisation features tools used to make flax fibre yarn, as well as crafts made of flax yarn. You can also buy oil flax products, such as oil and ground flaxseed. There is also a cafeteria that sells flaxseed pastries. Sepän torppa, the former home of blacksmith Isak Grundström built in the 1850s, was turned into a museum in 1985.

Marela showcases the life and lifestyle of a wealthy shipowner and his family at the turn of the 1900s, the golden age of seafaring in Rauma. The museum features changing exhibitions, including the “Minä ja Lemmikkini” photo exhibition exploring the history of pet keeping, the “Kirjontaa ja kodikkuutta – biedermeiersalonki raumalaiseen tyyliin” exhibition showcasing interior design and embroidery work from the Biedermeier period and the “Naisten työt” exhibition exploring women’s work and life in Rauma.

Kirsti – Sailor’s Home Museum

The Sailor’s Home Museum Kirsti takes visitors back to the olden days. The beautifully preserved courtyard and its buildings give a good idea of what the Old Rauma area looked like a couple of hundred years ago. The interior on the other hand shows how people lived in Old Rauma in different time periods.  You can also see a lace maker at work during your visit.

Old Town Hall

In the Old Town Hall you can explore the history and lace-making traditions of Rauma and visit the museum shop, Kistupuad, where you can find local handicrafts and souvenirs. The museum features the permanent Rauma Lace exhibition and the “Kosti Koskinen – Kadunmiehen päiväkirja” exhibition.  You can also see a lace maker at work during your visit.

Rauma Art Museum

The Pinnala property, where the Rauma Art Museum is located, is one of the best-preserved housing complexes in Old Rauma. During the summer, the museum features the “Lace on Skin” lace exhibition curated by Paola Suhonen. The museum also features the “Veden taju: Järven hiljaisuus” exhibition by Ulla-Maija Alanen and the “Unia vai kaikuja” exhibition by Laura Hynninen. The permanent exhibition features an art collection donated by Eino Valtonen, which includes Finnish art from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and European art from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Sammallahdenmäki, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

A Bronze Age burial site in Kivikylä, Lappi, consisting of a total of 36 burial cairns.

During the summer, you can find a guide on site from 10.00 to 17.00. Non-stop guided tours start from the southern information point (Savulaaksontie 181). Guided tours: 2 € / person, free admission for students and visitors under the age of 18.

Rauma Maritime Museum

The Rauma Maritime Museum’s permanent exhibition explores the history of seafaring, maritime education and shipbuilding in Rauma and the life of sailors both at sea and on land. The museum’s temporary exhibition, “Purjeet kokoon – menneen maailman muistajat”, brings to the fore people and projects that sought to memorialise the local and national changes in seafaring during the 19th century and early 20th century. The Maritime Museum tower features Katariina Mannio’s multisensory “Jumalten juomaa, Cacao theobroma” exhibition, which consists of graphic works made using a woodcutting technique.

Tammela House

Tammela House introduces UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Old Rauma’s renovation projects. The temporary exhibition, “Tarinoiden talot”, features scale models of Old Rauma buildings created by the students of the Freinet School of Rauma and the Rauma Teacher Training Institute.

The Teresia and Rafael Lönnström Home Museum

The Teresia and Rafael Lönnström Home Museum showcases the unique home and art collection of the industrialist couple from Rauma. In the Museum gallery you can learn more about previous and current Lönnström contemporary art projects. Children can watch a video where a mouse introduces the Lönnström home and tells about its inhabitants.

History of the telephone

The Old Rauma Telephone Museum features a collection by a private collector. The exhibition, featuring speech synthesisers and other old phone technology, explores the history of the telephone. The collection is based on material collected over 50 years, the oldest of which dates back to 1886 and the most recent to the 2010s. In the museum, you can explore and learn more about the history of past technology and get tips for the restoration and repair of old telephone devices. The exhibition space can accommodate up to 10 people at a time.

Local History Museum Muina

The museum features an exhibition called “Horses in the History of Rauma”, which explores the importance of horses to society both in the past and today, and their function, for example, in agriculture and during wars and reconstruction.

Ylen Homestead Art Museum

The museum features Väinö and Hilma Ylen’s folk art exhibition and ITE artist Väinö Ylen’s sculpture exhibition. The museum showcases over 200 concrete figures depicting past life and famous athletes and politicians. There is also a temporary exhibition of art works by Kirsi Kuusisto on display.

Gallery Porstua

Tommi-Wihtori Roström’s “Luanikas reissu – matkamuistoja ja maisemakuvia Raumalta” summer exhibition. The gallery features Rauma-themed memorabilia and postcards from past decades, as well as Tommi-Wihtori Roström’s graphic art. Kuutti Lavonen and the Auleen House

Permanent exhibition showcasing artist Kuutti Lavonen’s graphics that are also available for sale. Kuutti Lavonen is a leading artist in his field who is known for his paintings in St. Olaf’s Church in Tyrvää, among other things. The Auleen House is a former merchant’s house built in 1824. Since then, the house has served, for example, as the home and office of dialect writer and doctor Hj. Nortamo, the office of the local newspaper “Länsi-Suomi” and a grocery store.
